FIRE
Inspirational Quote: choose one quote to guide creativity
Each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor. ~Edgar Allan Poe
There may be a great fire in our soul, yet no one ever comes to warm himself at it, and the passers-by see only a wisp of smoke. ~Vincent van Gogh
The most powerful weapon on earth is the human soul on fire. ~Marshal Ferdinand Foch
When a heart is on fire, sparks always fly out of the mouth. ~Proverb
The moon’s an arrant thief, And her pale fire she snatches from the sun. ~William Shakespeare
The artist must create a spark before he can make a fire and before art is born, the artist must be ready to be consumed by the fire of his own creations. ~Auguste Rodin
Step 1:
Choose a quote to guide your creativity.
Step 2:
Decide what medium you will use to create your art.
Step 3:
Create.
Step 4:
Prepare work for presentation.
Quote guide:
Quotes are provided to guide creativity only. You should not use the quote in its entirety in your song, poem or artwork. You can use pieces of the quote for poetry or songs, but the new material should be your own and not just a repetition of the words in the quote. As you choose a quote, think about what it means to you. Write down words or create images that come to mind as you read it over and over. This is a good starting point for inspiration. If the quote is confusing to you, ask several different people what it means to them. This may help you better determine meaning.
Medium guide:
Create an artwork in the medium of your choice; acrylic/tempera painting, pencil, pen and ink, oil pastel, chalk pastel, watercolor or sculpture. Mixed media work submitted combines two or more mediums into one final piece (example, watercolor and pen & ink or oil pastel and acrylic paint). Photography submissions can be film based or digital, final image must be printed and matted.
Sculptural works can be made with found objects, wire, clay (air-dry or kiln fired), wood, and aluminum foil. You are not limited to these; however, they are examples of sculptural materials. Write a paragraph to go along with the sculpture describing how you used the theme “fire” and which quote was the focus guiding your creation.
Create a musical piece (instrumental or vocal). You can create your own instrument to make your sounds or use an instrument that you own. If an instrument is made, please provide a photographic sample of the instrument or turn in the instrument you made along with the music. Also, this should be accompanied by a paragraph stating how it relates to the theme of “fire”.
Create a theatrical skit. You can write a play. You can act out a scene from the play and video yourself in the scene. Limit these to no more than five minutes in length.
Create a poem inspired by one of the quotes. Remember, there are many types of poetic verses. You do not have to rhyme.
Create an interpretive dance and video yourself performing it. Again, keep the length of the performance to five minutes or less. This should be accompanied by a paragraph stating how it relates to the theme of “fire”.
Important: You may enter more than once, but not more than once in the same medium. For example, you could create a painting and write a poem and do an interpretive dance, but you could not create a painting, a drawing and a photograph.
Creation guide:
Artwork should be no larger than 11X14. Loose papers should be placed neatly inside a folder. Musical work should be recorded and submitted in a CD case. Any recorded music that cannot be played, will not be considered. Nor will any submission of artwork be considered without a full name. Paintings on canvas can be submitted without a frame, however, student information should be written on the back of the canvas with pencil. Do not submit work on canvas board (this material warps), however, you could submit work on recycled materials like thick cardboard, or ceiling tiles (just make sure your size is not larger than the requirements). All work submitted needs to have the quote you chose listed on the back as well as a short paragraph stating how the theme is referenced in your work.
Presentation guide:
Matt or frame artwork. Sign work on the back of the matt or frame, if work is placed inside a folder or CD case, make sure you label it with your first and last name, your grade, and your homeroom teacher’s name. If you attempt the work during the summer and do not know your homeroom teacher’s name, leave this area blank until you are assigned a homeroom teacher. Turn in materials to Ms. J. Johnson, Mr. Manasco, or your homeroom teacher. Homeroom teachers can turn the work into our boxes in the office. Sculptural works that will not fit in mailboxes can be put in the art room or the music room. Due date for Elements: November 30th, 2009. Winners announced the beginning of January.
